Zero-torque putters spent two years as a premium category by default. L.A.B. Golf built the segment from Adam Scott's bag outward, and its flagship models sit north of $400. Odyssey, TaylorMade and Bettinardi all followed with their own interpretations of shaft-axis-through-CG geometry, and none of them landed cheap. Wilson's entry into that fight is priced at $199.99, which is less than half the going rate at the top of the category and roughly what a stock Odyssey mallet costs at Dick's.
The latest additions are two women's models, The 606 and Lakeview, arriving August 27 in a single 33-inch length with a Wilson Premium Midsize grip. Both carry the same architecture as the Zero Torque putters Wilson launched earlier this year: center of gravity positioned so the shaft axis runs through it, one degree of forward shaft lean built into the hosel, a double-milled face, and Metal Injection Molding as the manufacturing route. The red accents on the existing line become gold. The 606 is a winged mallet with two alignment lines and a dot. Lakeview is a half-moon with a single line. The names, for anyone who has not spent time on Chicago's north side, are a park and a neighborhood roughly four miles from Wilson's headquarters.
MIM is the part worth pausing on, because it is doing more work here than the colorway. Metal injection molding hit golf properly around 2019, when Cobra put out the King MIM wedges and Mizuno and PXG followed with their own MIM short-game pieces. The process suits exactly this problem: intricate internal geometry, tight tolerances, moderate production volumes, and a unit cost that does not scale the way full CNC milling does. Zero-torque designs require mass placed in specific, awkward locations to get the CG onto the shaft axis. Milling that from a billet is expensive. Molding it is not. That is the actual mechanism behind the $199.99 price, and it is a real engineering answer rather than a marketing one.
The women's framing deserves a harder look. Putter length is a fitting variable, not a gender variable, and 33 inches has been a stock option at Scotty Cameron and Odyssey for years. So this is not new engineering. What it is, is a merchandising decision, and a more honest one than the category's history would suggest. The women's equipment playbook since the Callaway Solaire era has been de-content and repackage: lighter heads, softer flexes, box sets, a price cut that came with a spec cut. Wilson did none of that. Same MIM head, same double-milled face, same technology story, same price as the men's models. The only changes are length, grip size and a gold finish. Given how many brands have quietly used women's SKUs as an inventory-clearing exercise, shipping identical construction at identical pricing is the more interesting choice.
The harder question is whether anyone sees it. Wilson sits 57th globally in brand visibility and dropped 18.2 percent month over month heading into this launch, which is the durable Wilson problem: 61 major championships in the trophy case and a share of voice that does not reflect any of it. Zero torque is the one category in golf right now where a value entrant can be genuinely disruptive, because the technology is well documented, the patents are navigable, and the incumbent pricing leaves an enormous gap underneath it. A $199.99 MIM mallet with credible geometry should be an easy sell. Wilson has been on the correct side of a price-versus-performance argument many times and lost the shelf anyway.
Watch what happens at retail in September. If the 33-inch SKUs move without a tour proof point or a media buy behind them, Wilson has found something rare: a technology story that sells itself at a price the category's leaders cannot match without cannibalizing their own margin. If they sit, it confirms that zero torque is currently being bought as a premium object rather than a solution, and that being right about the engineering was never the hard part.
