Eastside Golf Now Sells Hoodies Between Gates. That's Not a Small Detail.

Eastside Golf opened a storefront at Detroit's airport with prices 40-80% above online. The pricing gap says more about the brand than the location does.

Airport retail is where brands go to test whether their customer will pay a captive-audience premium for the privilege of impulse. Eastside Golf just opted in.

The brand founded by Olajuwon Ajanaku and Earl Cooper in 2019 has opened a storefront at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, stocking headcovers, polos, and hoodies at prices reportedly 40 to 80 percent above what the same SKUs cost on the brand's website. That gap is not a rounding error. It is a strategic decision, and it says something about where Eastside thinks it sits in the market.

For context, airport golf retail is a category with almost no incumbents. PGA Tour Shops exist in a handful of terminals, mostly leaning on logo hats and gift-tier accessories for the business traveler who forgot a Father's Day present. A proper apparel brand taking a lease in a Detroit concourse is closer to what Shinola or Peter Millar have done in select airports: brand-building disguised as retail. The unit economics of an airport store rarely justify themselves on volume alone. You are paying for the impression, the second-screen visibility, the reminder that the brand exists at the exact moment a golfer is heading somewhere to play.

Eastside's choice of Detroit is not accidental either. This is the brand's home market, the city stitched into its origin story and its logo. Opening in DTW is closer to a flag-planting exercise than a pure commerce play. The founders have spent six years building Eastside as a cultural project first and an apparel business second, and cultural projects need physical touchpoints. A store in the terminal your hometown flies through is a low-risk way to get one without committing to a full flagship on Woodward.

The pricing question is harder to defend. Charging captive-audience premiums on a brand whose entire ethos is accessibility and bringing new players into golf reads like a contradiction the marketing team will eventually have to answer for. Malbon can get away with a Newark boutique markup because Malbon has always been priced like it wants to gatekeep. Eastside built its audience on the opposite promise. Someone stumbling into that Detroit store for the first time, seeing a $95 hoodie ringing up at $150, is getting an introduction to the brand that undercuts what the brand says it stands for. That is a brand equity problem hiding inside a retail decision.

Still, the broader move is worth watching. Eastside sits at #44 in DORMIED's global brand rankings, flat month-over-month, in a category where the top ten spots are locked up by legacy players with wholesale relationships Eastside will never match on volume. Non-traditional retail is one of the few levers a challenger brand at this scale can actually pull. Pop-ups, airport concessions, hotel lobby cases at destination golf resorts, these are the venues where a brand with cultural cachet can convert visibility into sales without competing for shelf space at Dick's or PGA Tour Superstore. Sugarloaf Social Club, Bogey Boys, Metalwood, and a handful of other insurgent apparel brands are all quietly experimenting with the same playbook.

The question for Eastside is whether this Detroit location is a one-off homecoming or the first node in a network. If DTW performs, expect ATL, MDW, and LGA to follow, all cities where the brand has active community programming. If it doesn't, the store quietly closes in eighteen months and the industry never hears about it again. Either way, the next thing to watch is not the storefront itself. It is whether Eastside adjusts the airport pricing or lets the gap ride. That decision will tell you which brand Eastside is actually building.
