Sid Mashburn is the shop Esquire and GQ have both called the best men's store in America, and its golf assortment is an extension of a much larger idea about how clothes should be sold. Mashburn grew up in Brandon, Mississippi, became J.Crew's first men's designer in 1980s New York where he created the Barn Jacket, then worked at Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Lands' End before he and his wife Ann moved to Atlanta with five daughters and opened a single shop on the Westside in October 2007. Ann Mashburn followed next door in 2010. The parent company now runs shops in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles and Nashville, producing tailored clothing, shirts, sportswear, neckwear, shoes and leather goods with most production in Italy. The Golf Shop is a curated corner of that, not a separate business. What it sells is the same thing the stores sell, which is a specific idea of American classicism with the fit updated. Air Mail called him Georgia's Ralph Lauren, and the comparison is not lazy.
