Nine Parts, Twenty Putters, One $400 Price: The Mizuno M.Craft X Math

Mizuno's M.Craft X putter line now builds 20 configurations from nine parts, including a zero-torque Z front. The real product is a fitting system.

What Happened

Mizuno extended its modular M.Craft X putter line through 2027, adding two rear sections and a zero-torque Z front section. Four fronts and five backs now yield 20 configurations from nine manufactured parts, priced at $400 with individual backs sold separately for $150. The design's real advantage is retail: fitters cover the full range without stocking 20 heads.

A $400 milled putter is one of the slowest-turning SKUs in a pro shop, and head shape is the least predictable variable in the entire category. Nobody can forecast whether this season's buyers want a fang, a round mallet or a wide blade. That inventory problem, more than any tinkerer's fantasy, is what the Mizuno M.Craft X line is engineered to solve.

Mizuno has extended the modular M.Craft X platform through 2027 and added three components: two new rear sections and a new front. The Two back is a wide-body blade with flared rear corners. The Three is a domed mallet whose raised central region lifts the sight line closer to the equator of the ball, at the cost of never scooping a ball out of the hole again. The new front section is the Z, and it carries a zero-torque hosel. With four fronts and five backs all interchangeable, the line now yields 20 buildable putters from nine manufactured parts. Individual back sections sell a la carte for $150.

The zero-torque execution is the part worth pausing on. Mizuno reversed the shaft position on the plumber's neck to create onset rather than offset, pointing the shaft axis at the head's center of gravity so the putter balances torque-free around it. Every brand in golf shipped a zero-torque model after L.A.B. proved the category had a buyer, and almost all of those are single-piece heads where CG is fixed by construction. Doing it modularly is a harder brief. All five M.Craft X backs had to be designed to a common CG location so that swapping the Z2 for the Z3, two dramatically different shapes, leaves the toe hang profile untouched. Most of the mass sits in the forged and milled carbon steel front section, and the shaft axis enters roughly between the sole weights. That is a real engineering constraint solved, not a marketing claim dressed as one.

The closest precedent is not another putter. It is the adjustable hosel. TaylorMade's FCT sleeve in 2009 collapsed a wall of loft and face-angle SKUs into a single head and quietly rewrote how driver inventory worked at retail. Putters never got that treatment because the fitting variables are not numbers on a sleeve, they are shape at address and neck style. Mizuno has effectively built the putter version: a fitter with one component set can put every configuration in a customer's hands in the time it takes to back two Torx screws out of the sole. The shop covers the full range without carrying 20 heads at $400 apiece.

The more interesting business wrinkle is the $150 back. Putters have historically had no aftermarket. A driver owner buys shafts and grips for years. A putter owner buys a putter and then, eventually, buys a different putter from someone else. A $150 component that changes the head shape without changing the brand on the receipt is a repeat-purchase mechanism in a category that has never had one, and it keeps the customer inside Mizuno's ecosystem at the exact moment they would otherwise be browsing Scotty Cameron's used market. Manufacturing nine parts instead of 20 heads is also, not incidentally, how a milled putter lands under most of its milled competition on price.

This matters more for Mizuno than the volume suggests. The brand's equity is forged irons, full stop, and its putter presence has been a footnote for two decades. Sitting at 23rd globally with a flat month, Mizuno has stability and no obvious upward vector. Owning a structural advantage in putter fitting is a plausible route to one, because fitting is where the brand already has credibility with the accounts that sell it.

Watch the fitting bays, not the WITB photos. The line lives or dies on whether independent shops and club pros actually buy the component set and build fittings around it, and whether that $150 back becomes a genuine second transaction rather than a spec-sheet footnote. If both happen by the 2027 model year, expect at least one major OEM to arrive with a modular platform of its own, and expect it to look a lot like this one.
