Moment of inertia is a property every golf ball has and almost no golf ball marketing has ever tried to sell. Bridgestone is selling it now. The new TOUR B X uses what the company calls VeloSurge technology, built around a denser mantle material that pushes mass outward from the core and raises the ball's MOI to levels Bridgestone says have not been reached before.
That ball is at the center of this week's announcement: Chris Gotterup, Bridgestone staffer, has been named a captain's pick for the 2026 U.S. Presidents Cup team. Three wins this season at the Sony Open, the WM Phoenix Open and the John Deere Classic, 14 top-25s, five top-5s, seventh in the world ranking. He plays the TOUR B X and Bridgestone's 220 MB forged irons. The captain who picked him, Brandt Snedeker, is also a Bridgestone ambassador, which is a coincidence the release does not draw attention to and does not need to.
The MOI claim deserves a closer look than the win column. Raising a ball's moment of inertia is real physics with a real effect: a higher-MOI ball resists changes in its rotational state, which means it holds spin longer through flight rather than shedding it. That is a launch and descent story. It is not, on its own, a ball speed story. Ball speed comes from the core's compression behavior and the COR of the construction at impact, not from where the mass sits. The more interesting question is why Bridgestone is running the tour-win playbook at all. Its actual competitive asset is not on the leaderboard. It is the fitting database: more than four million ball fittings across live events, the online tool and the OTTO autonomous fitting units. No other ball manufacturer has built a consumer data operation like that, and Bridgestone has been at it since 2006, back when the idea that an amateur should be fitted for a ball at all was treated as a novelty. That program is the reason the TOUR B line is segmented by swing speed at 105 mph rather than by tour player preference. It is a genuinely different product philosophy from the one Titleist runs, and it is nowhere in this announcement.
The gap shows up in the numbers. Bridgestone sits 67th of 215 brands in the DORMIED Index this month, down 18.2 percent, in a month when a staff player with three wins made a Presidents Cup team. Three victories and a captain's pick did not move the brand. That is not a Bridgestone failure so much as a category fact: golf ball share is decided in the pro shop rack and the Costco aisle, not on Sunday. Nike learned it in reverse when it exited hard goods in 2016 despite having the most decorated ball staff in the sport. Bridgestone picked up Tiger Woods out of that collapse and did not pick up meaningful market share with him.
Which makes the next twelve months a test of whether Bridgestone knows what it owns. The company that put OTTO in retail and ran four million fittings has a story no competitor can copy, and it keeps leading with a story every competitor can.
