← Back to the DORMIED IndexToulon Golf is Sean Toulon’s second act in the boutique putter business, and its existence is one of the more unusual stories in modern golf equipment. Toulon, a former TaylorMade executive vice president who oversaw sales growth from $349 million in 1999 to $1.7 billion in 2013, retired briefly in 2015 before launching Toulon Design with sons Tony and Joe. The original company milled premium putters from solid blocks of 303 stainless steel using a vacuum brazing technique that allowed multiple head and hosel configurations. It was profitable in its first month. Within a year, Callaway acquired it. From 2016 through July 2023, Sean Toulon ran Odyssey as general manager while the Toulon name lived on as Odyssey’s high-end milled sub-brand. Toulon putters racked up more than 50 wins on global tours and became the second-most-used milled putter in professional golf. Then Sean Toulon retired again, and this time he came back with Toulon Golf, co-founded with son Tony and longtime industry stalwart Toru Kamatari, in a unique structure: independent from Callaway, but with Callaway as a partner. The 2024 First Run collection introduced the Dogwood and the San Diego, the latter a classic blade head that reviewers called astonishingly beautiful. The positioning is specific. Toulon Golf is not chasing the mainline market it once owned through Odyssey. The pricing is higher than the Toulon-by-Odyssey models. The materials, the milling tolerances, and the production runs are smaller. The audience is the high-end collector and the player who wants a putter built closer to the way Scotty Cameron and PXG occupy the premium tier, but with the family name attached and Callaway technology accessible in the background. After 100-plus combined patents and decades of equipment leadership, Sean Toulon is once again building putters with his name on the back. The team has made every mistake a startup can make. They aren’t going to make those again.
