Puma Golf's Gumtree Collab Is a Bet That Golfers Want to Slow Down

Stillness is not a word you hear often in golf marketing. Speed sells. Distance sells. The idea that a golfer might want to pause and look at a mountain instead of checking their launch monitor is, commercially speaking, a risk. Puma Golf is taking it anyway.

The Field Notes collection, a collaboration with the small New York-based outfit Gumtree Golf & Nature Club, drops this month with a capsule of apparel and footwear built around what the brands are calling "observation, not urgency." The pieces draw from Rocky Mountain color palettes and natural materials, with prices ranging from $40 caps to $130 quarter-zips. It is not loud. It is not trying to be. The campaign imagery features landscapes, not launch data.

Gumtree is an interesting partner choice. The brand operates in a niche that barely existed five years ago: experiential golf rooted in craft and place. They run multi-day gatherings in remote locations and sell small-batch goods made from found materials. It is the kind of operation that would have seemed precious or irrelevant to a major athletic brand a decade ago. That Puma sees value in aligning with them says something about where the market is headed.

Puma Golf currently sits at 37th globally in brand intelligence, with a notable 50 percent month-over-month gain. That trajectory suggests the brand is finding traction somewhere, though it remains a tier below the dominant apparel players. Collaborations like this one are not going to move enormous volume. They are positioning plays. Puma is signaling that it wants to be associated with a certain kind of golfer: one who cares about aesthetics, environment, and experience as much as performance metrics.

Whether that golfer exists in large enough numbers to matter is the open question. The Field Notes collection is a small bet, but it is a directional one. Puma is not chasing the same customer everyone else is chasing. If the market continues to fragment along lifestyle lines, that could prove to be the smarter long game.
