Toe Flow in a Mallet Was Supposed to Be a Contradiction. Scotty Cameron's Phantom 9.5R Sells It for $549

Scotty Cameron's Phantom 9.5R hits shops Sept 30 at $549. A mallet with toe flow is now tour golf's fastest-spreading putter setup, and that says a lot.

What Happened

Scotty Cameron's Phantom 9.5R goes on pre-sale now and reaches shops September 30 at $549 MAP, US and right hand only. It shares the 9R head shape but uses an elongated jet neck for more toe flow. Cameron Young has won three times with it, including THE PLAYERS, and Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open.

Scotty Cameron is putting the Phantom 9.5R into retail on September 30 at a $549 MAP, roughly 17 months after Cameron Young first put a prototype in play at the 2025 RBC Heritage. Pre-sale opens now, US only, right hand only, in 33, 34 and 35 inches. The head shape is shared with the 9R and 9.2R. The difference is entirely in the hosel.

That is the part worth reading twice. The 9.5R is not a new head, a new insert or a new material. It is an elongated jet neck bolted to an existing shape to produce more toe flow, and it is currently the fastest-spreading Cameron setup on the PGA TOUR. Young has won three times with it, including THE PLAYERS. Jackson Koivun switched the week before winning the 3M Open in his third professional start. Preston Stout won the NCAA individual title with one. Justin Thomas asked to test Young's exact build at the Truist and ended up gaming a backup putter originally milled for another player.

The broader category should find this uncomfortable. For fifteen years the mallet was sold to golfers as the corrective for an arcing stroke: higher MOI, face-balanced, stop the face from rotating and stop missing left. Ping built an entire fitting system around it in the late 2000s, sorting golfers into straight, slight arc and strong arc buckets and handing the mallets to the straight-stroke players. Odyssey's #7 and TaylorMade's original Spider ran the same logic. What the 9.5R demonstrates is that a meaningful share of elite putters want the mallet's footprint and sightline while keeping the release of a blade. Young's own explanation is that the added rotation made the center of the face more apparent to him and tightened his roll. Cameron's tour rep Brad Cloke described the process as working downward from face-balanced until Young found the flow he wanted. That is fitting in reverse, and it is not what the marketing of the last decade suggested would happen.

Structurally, this is Cameron running the Vokey playbook inside the same company. Vokey took one wedge head and sold it as six sole grinds, turning a fitting variable into a SKU. The 2026 Phantom line is five head shapes across 12 configurations, where the meaningful variable is the neck. Same milling, same Studio Carbon Steel full-face insert with chain-link milling, different hosel geometry. It is an efficient way to expand a lineup without new tooling for every model, and it moves the conversation with a fitter from "which head do you like" to "how much does your face rotate," which is a far better sales conversation because it has a measurable answer.

The press release also contains two entries that name no one: a top-70 FedExCup player who switched at the start of the playoffs, and the 2025 US Open champion who went to a flow-neck 9.5R at the Travelers. Anonymity in a tour count usually means the player's bag belongs to somebody else. Those are the two most persuasive lines in the document and the two Cameron cannot print properly. Meanwhile the honest limitation is right there in the spec sheet: right hand only, 3.5 degrees of loft, 70 degrees of lie, and a single long sightline that is the entire alignment story.

Cameron sits eighth of 215 brands globally on the DORMIED Index and moved zero percent month over month, which is what dominance without novelty looks like. The company does not need a category-shifting launch; it needs the tour validation pipeline to keep converting into $549 retail units, and it is. The thing to watch is whether the rest of the industry follows the neck rather than the head. If Odyssey and TaylorMade start selling toe-hang variants of their highest-MOI mallets in 2027, the 9.5R will have moved the category without changing a single milled contour.
