KBS Built a 210-Gram Broomstick Shaft. The Anchoring Ban Was Supposed to Make That Unnecessary.

KBS expands its TOUR GPS putter shaft line with 155g and 210g broomstick models, a bet on the long putter revival and the custom fitter channel.

A 210-gram graphite putter shaft weighs more than almost every steel putter shaft in production. Standard stepless .370 steel lands somewhere between 110 and 135 grams depending on cut length, which means KBS went to composite construction and then deliberately added mass. Graphite is normally the material you choose to take weight out. Here it is the material that lets an engineer decide exactly where the weight goes.

That is the actual story inside the KBS TOUR GPS line extension. The company added two models: a 155-gram version in .355 and .370 tips for traditional and counterbalanced builds, and a 210-gram, .370-only shaft built specifically for broomstick putters. Both lean on a high balance point, with mass biased toward the butt end to slow face rotation through impact and stabilize the stroke on longer putts. The engineering claim is legitimate and testable. Whether the market for it exists at scale is the more interesting question.

Putter shafts were not a category ten years ago. They were an afterthought, a piece of steel that connected a head to a grip, and nobody in a fitting bay asked about them. Breakthrough Golf Technology changed that in 2018 with the Stability shaft, which was met with real skepticism at $199 and then quietly ended up in more tour bags than anyone predicted. LA Golf, Accra, Nippon and KBS all followed. The premium putter shaft now sits at $150 to $250 and lives almost entirely in the custom fitter and independent builder channel, not on a big-box wall. That distribution reality matters more than the spec sheet.

The broomstick SKU is the genuinely notable piece. When the USGA and R&A implemented Rule 14-1b on January 1, 2016, the assumption across the industry was that the long putter was finished. It wasn't. The rule banned anchoring, not length, and the equipment side spent several years treating that distinction as academic. Then Lucas Glover won twice in three weeks in 2023 with a long putter, Adam Scott never put his down, Akshay Bhatia turned the broomstick into a signature, and a category everyone had written off came back with a non-anchored stroke. KBS building a dedicated 210-gram shaft for that build in 2026 is a read on where the long putter actually landed, ten years after the rule that was supposed to eliminate it.

Commercially, this is KBS diversifying away from a saturated iron shaft market. The company built its reputation on KBS Tour, C-Taper and $-Taper, and it competes head-to-head with True Temper and Nippon in a segment where tour seeding is expensive and share moves slowly. Putter shafts are lower volume and higher margin, and more importantly they put KBS in front of the fitter every time a putter gets rebuilt. That is a relationship business, and the .355 tip option is a tell: it exists to serve club builders working with older and boutique heads, not to serve a retail SKU. KBS sits at 51st in the global brand index this month, flat month over month, and a putter shaft line extension is not what changes that number. Tour iron counts do. This is margin and channel work, not attention work.

Watch what KBS does with tour validation on the GPS platform over the next two seasons. Shaft companies win putter shaft arguments the way BGT did, by showing up in bags of players who are demonstrably good at putting, not by publishing MOI claims. If the 210-gram model shows up under a broomstick that wins something, the category gets a second product cycle. If it doesn't, this becomes a well-engineered fitter accessory that a few hundred serious builders love and nobody else notices, which for a shaft company with KBS's iron business may be a perfectly acceptable outcome.
