Why Did the Callaway Supersoft Score a C Grade?

Weight and diameter both graded B-minus, every ball cleared the USGA weight limit, and the Good Ball Rate landed at 92 percent with three flagged balls out of 36. What sank it was compression. Chrome Soft launched in 2015 and became the vehicle for the company's serious ball engineering, including the tolerance-controlled tour models made in Chicopee. The Supersoft went a different direction. It is a volume product priced at $26.99 that has moved units for over a decade because the name recognition is enormous and the pitch, softer feel without the tour-ball price, is one of the easiest in golf to understand. But the company that spent 20 years building credibility as a ball manufacturer is now shipping its highest-volume ball from two contract facilities in two countries, and the test data is starting to make that visible to the people who read test data. That audience is small. It is also the audience that tells everyone else what to buy.
