Aldila is one of the foundational names in graphite shaft technology, with a history stretching back to 1972 when composite materials were still exotic in golf equipment. Based in Poway, California, the brand pioneered the development and refinement of graphite shafts for woods and drivers, helping transition the industry away from steel in longer clubs. Aldila's NV line, launched in the early 2000s, became one of the most recognizable shaft families in golf, known for its smooth feel and mid-launch characteristics. The Rogue line followed, offering a stiffer profile and appealing to players with faster swing speeds seeking lower spin and more control. For decades, Aldila shafts were a staple offering from major OEMs, appearing as stock and upgrade options in driver and fairway wood lineups from TaylorMade, Callaway, and others. The brand maintained a visible tour presence, with staff players and frequent appearances in the bags of professionals, though it operated in an increasingly competitive market against Fujikura, Mitsubishi, and Graphite Design. In 2010, Aldila was acquired by Mitsubishi Chemical Group, which also owns Mitsubishi Chemical (the shaft maker), creating an unusual situation where one parent company owned two competing golf shaft brands. Production eventually shifted, and the Aldila name became less prominent in new equipment releases, though it remains available through custom fitting channels and as an aftermarket option. Aldila represents an earlier era of golf shaft innovation, when graphite was still proving itself and brands were defined more by engineering than marketing. The name still carries weight among club fitters and older golfers who remember when an Aldila shaft was a legitimate performance upgrade.
