A perfect good ball rate is rarer in Ball Lab testing than the phrase suggests, and the 2026 Srixon Z-Star Diamond posted one: 36 balls inspected, zero flagged for defects in cores, layers or covers. It still finished at 89 out of 100 and a B+, which reads like a downgrade until you look at where the points went.
MyGolfSpy's teardown of the $54.99 three-piece urethane ball graded every one of the five categories between B- and B. Compression averaged 93, firm by database standards and in the same neighborhood as Chrome Tour and TP5. Compression consistency graded B- on a delta of 8.2 points, spread from 88.8 to 97.0, which is actually tighter than the database average of 9.6. Compression symmetry, the measure of how evenly a single ball behaves across three points on its own surface, came in at 1.5 against a field average of 1.9. Weight averaged 1.6096 ounces with a range of 0.0117, the widest number on the card, driven by one outlier in Box 1. Diameter averaged 1.6808 inches with roundness deviation of 0.0006 and no sample-wide pole-versus-seam bias.
The detail worth sitting with is buried in the compression section: Box 2 ran consistently firmer than Boxes 1 and 3. Not one ball, the box. That is not a quality control failure in the way a bad ball is a quality control failure. It is production drift, the signature of a core batch cured or blended slightly differently on a different shift or a different day. Ball Lab's methodology pulls three boxes precisely to catch it, and the scoring system weights compression more heavily than weight or diameter, so batch-level drift costs more than almost anything else can. A golfer who buys a single box likely never experiences the 8.2-point spread the sample reports. A golfer who buys a case across two production runs might.
That distinction matters more for Srixon than for most brands on the shelf, because Srixon actually owns the factory. The Z-Star Diamond comes out of Sumitomo Rubber's plant in Cikampek, Indonesia. Titleist, Bridgestone and Callaway also control their own ball manufacturing; a meaningful share of the rest of the premium and near-premium market is made under contract in Taiwan by facilities whose names never appear on the box. Owning the line is what buys you a zero-defect record. It is also what makes box-to-box drift a solvable problem rather than a supplier conversation. Srixon has the process data on those three lots. Nobody buying a contract-manufactured ball does.
The commercial context sharpens it. The Diamond arrived as a limited release built around tour feedback and graduated into a permanent slot at the top of the Z-Star family, aimed squarely at players cross-shopping the ProV1x and TP5x. At $54.99, Srixon is no longer competing on being the value alternative to the market leader. It is competing on being the same ball for slightly less, which means manufacturing tolerance is the argument, not the footnote. Srixon sits 13th globally in brand presence and has held that position flat month over month, which is the profile of a company converting product credibility efficiently but not expanding the audience that hears about it. A perfect defect record is exactly the kind of proof point that does not travel on its own.
The interesting question for the next cycle is whether Srixon treats an 89 as a win or a target. The line already produces balls that are internally consistent and free of defects. What it has not yet proven is that any two boxes off the shelf are the same ball. That is a process problem, not a design problem, and process problems are the ones a company with its own factory is supposed to fix. If the 2027 card shows three boxes that match, Srixon will have earned the price it is already charging.
