Graphite Design's Tour AD EK Arrives in September, and It's the 11th Active Wood Shaft in a Lineup That Already Confuses Fitters

Graphite Design's Tour AD EK launches September 4, 2026, adding an eleventh wood shaft to a Tour AD lineup that already challenges fitters to keep straight.

Graphite Design's US distributor, Pro's Choice, has set September 4 as the launch date for the Tour AD EK, the eleventh Tour AD wood shaft currently in active distribution. The EK, short for Extra Kick, slots into a mid/high launch, low/mid spin profile and uses Toray's T1200G carbon fiber in the tip section alongside the company's AD Shield wrap. Retail pricing has not been announced, but recent Tour AD releases have street-priced between $450 and $550.

The engineering story is real. Toray T1200G is one of the highest tensile-strength carbon fibers commercially available, roughly 20 percent stronger by fiber tensile than the T1100G that anchored the Tour AD UB tip a few years ago. Concentrating that material in the tip section is a legitimate stability play, not a marketing flourish. Graphite Design has been ahead of most of the shaft category on fiber generation for a decade, and the EK continues that pattern. The AD Shield technology, a bias-wrap layer designed to reduce ovaling at impact, has been in the Tour AD line since the VF release and has genuine measurable effect on tip torque numbers.

What's harder to justify is the shelf. The Tour AD wood catalog now includes the DI, IZ, XC, UB, CQ, VF, GC, FI, the Anti-Gravity aG33, and now the EK. That's before hybrids and irons. Each shaft has its own launch and spin window, and Graphite Design's marketing materials will tell you they're all distinct. In practice, most fitters carry three or four and steer players between them based on feel as much as data. When a brand releases its eleventh wood shaft into a portfolio the trade already struggles to merchandise, the question is whether it's serving the fitter or crowding the fitter.

The broader context matters. Fujikura's Ventus line has consolidated the premium aftermarket conversation over the past four years to the point where Ventus Blue, Black, and Red account for a disproportionate share of tour puts and premium aftermarket orders. Mitsubishi has answered with the Diamana line refresh and the Kai'li series. Graphite Design's response has been proliferation rather than consolidation, a strategy that works if the fitter network can keep up and starts to fracture if it can't. The last time a premium shaft brand ran a similar release cadence, Aldila's proliferation in the mid-2010s, the outcome was brand dilution and a sale to True Temper. That's not a prediction, it's a precedent worth noting.

The tour count Graphite Design cited, 44 global wins in 2025, is legitimate and points to why the brand still commands premium pricing. Tour credibility is Graphite Design's moat, and it's a real one. Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, and a rotating cast of Japan Tour and LPGA players continue to game Tour AD shafts across multiple product cycles. The Japan-only manufacturing story also holds. Unlike several competitors who've shifted production to lower-cost facilities, the Chichibu plant remains the exclusive source, and that consistency is part of what fitters pay for.

The DORMIED ranking of 86 and a month-over-month decline of 18 percent tells a smaller story: brand visibility outside the fitting bay is fading even as tour presence holds. That's the fundamental Graphite Design problem. The brand is beloved by the fitter class and largely invisible to the golfer who buys a driver off a rack and never asks what shaft is in it. Ventus solved that visibility problem by becoming a stock offering across every major OEM. Graphite Design has been more selective, and the tradeoff shows.

The EK will fit somebody's swing beautifully. That's not the question. The question is whether Graphite Design's US business needs an eleventh wood shaft more than it needs a clearer story about which three to buy. September will start answering that.
