Malbon Hired a Film Crew for a Junior Golf Event. That's the Whole Story.

Malbon named Babygrande Golf production partner for Future Buckets. Why hiring a film crew for a junior event signals IP development, not sponsorship.

Hiring a production company is what you do when you own something. Sponsors write checks and wait for the recap video someone else makes.

Babygrande Golf has been named official media production partner for the 2026 Future Buckets Salty Turf Showdown, Malbon's youth event running August 13 at Salty Turf in San Clemente. The deal covers player interviews, featured group highlights, behind-the-scenes footage, social cutdowns, and promotional video, all distributed through Babygrande's channels. Babygrande's Domingo Neris, who works as Chi Chi Grande, has known Stephen Malbon for two decades, which explains how the conversation started but not why it matters.

What matters is the structure. Malbon is not buying signage at somebody else's junior tournament. It is building an event it controls and then contracting out the camera work, which is the exact sequence a brand follows when it intends to turn a competition into recurring intellectual property rather than a line item in the marketing budget. The precedent already exists in this category, and Babygrande has worked it: the Under Armour World Championship, an apparel brand's name welded to a junior event that college coaches take seriously. Under Armour bought credibility with the recruiting apparatus. Malbon is buying something harder to quantify and probably more durable, which is being the brand a 14-year-old associates with golf feeling like his own thing instead of his father's.

The venue choice is not incidental either. Salty Turf is a short-course concept in San Clemente, not a 7,200-yard championship layout with a member-guest and a dress code. Running a marquee junior event on a short course communicates the entire Malbon thesis without a press release having to say it: golf as a hangout, not an examination. Pair that with a media partner whose whole business is digital-first junior and collegiate coverage, and the content is designed for the platform where the audience actually lives rather than for a highlight package nobody watches.

There is a business reason apparel brands are suddenly interested in the 12-to-17 bracket, and it is not charity. Tour visibility has gotten expensive to the point of absurdity, with the going rate for a competitive Sunday hat and shirt package outrunning what most brands in this tier can justify against actual sell-through. Junior golf is the only segment of the sport where brand preference forms before price sensitivity does, and it is significantly cheaper to reach. A kid who wears Malbon at 15 because the event he cared about was a Malbon event becomes a customer with a 40-year runway. That math is why Nike ran junior camps for decades and why the growth-of-the-game language in these announcements always sits next to a merchandising calendar.

Malbon sits sixth globally on the DORMIED Index this month with a flat month-over-month reading, which is the recognizable plateau of a brand that has already won the awareness fight. Collabs generate spikes and then stop generating them, because the fourth capsule with a beverage company lands differently than the first. Owned events do the opposite. They compound, slowly and without a resale market, and they give a brand something no drop calendar provides: a reason to exist in August of a year when nothing is launching.

The thing to watch is whether Future Buckets returns in 2027 with more dates and a real qualifying structure, or whether it stays a single-day showcase with good footage attached. One of those is a marketing activation with a film crew. The other is Malbon quietly building the junior golf pipeline the legacy brands assumed would always route through the same country club infrastructure that has been aging out for fifteen years. The production deal suggests they understand which one they are attempting. Whether they have the operational patience to run an event series for a decade is a different question, and the answer will not be visible until the version of this tournament that nobody is excited about yet.
