Adams Golf occupies a specific chapter in golf equipment history: the brand that made hybrids mainstream. Founded in 1987 by Barney Adams in Plano, Texas, the company gained prominence through the Tight Lies fairway wood in the mid-1990s, a low-profile club designed to help average golfers hit long shots off tight lies, hence the name. That innovation established Adams as a problem-solver for everyday players, a reputation it cemented with the Idea hybrid line that helped popularize hybrid clubs as replacements for hard-to-hit long irons. By the early 2000s, Adams was one of the success stories in golf equipment, a mid-sized independent competing against industry giants. TaylorMade acquired Adams in 2012 for a reported $70 million, initially maintaining it as a separate brand targeting value-conscious golfers and those seeking game-improvement technology. But as TaylorMade's own product lines expanded and the golf market contracted, Adams was gradually phased out. By 2016, TaylorMade had ceased new Adams product development, effectively mothballing the brand while retaining the intellectual property and name.
